Spider: I went into the garage, and I saw a small spider, resting on its silken web, that was on the back of the garage door. This small spider, had eight very long, thin, jointed legs. The color of its legs, was light brown. It also had some dark areas, on each of its legs. Its abdomen, was a dark color. This spider, was one eighth of an inch wide, and one fourth of an inch long. Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Arachnida Order: Araneae Spiders, ( order Araneae ), are air-breathing arthropods, that have eight legs, and chelicerae with fangs, that inject venom. A spiders leg, is made up of seven distinct parts: coxa, trochanter, femur, patella, tibia, metatarsus, and tarsus. Two body parts and eight walking legs. Head and thorax are combined into one body segment ( cephalothorax ), and a second body segment ( abdomen ). The leg has seven segments. Tip of legs of many spiders, have two tiny claws. Spiders have no antennae. There size is from less than 0.1 cm ( .04 in ) to more than 10 cm ( 4 in ). Spiders have simple eyes. Spinnerets are present on the tip of the abdomen. Spiders have no wings. Spiders have piercing jaws ( fangs ). The eight legs, are attached to the cephalothorax. Spiders eat whatever insects are available in there environment. Spiders must shed there exoskeleton, or molt, in order to grow. Spiders silk, is made of strong strands of protein. This spider was alive, and able to move.
