Today we are going to take a look at an interesting game played between Miguel Najdorf and Bobby Fischer at the 2nd Piatigorsky Cup in the year 1966. It was a triennial series of double round-robin grandmaster chess tournaments held in the United States in the 1960s. The Piatigorsky Cups were the strongest U.S. chess tournaments since New York 1927. The Benoni variation was played from the King’s Indian Defense. What’s interesting about this game is that Fischer made a small inaccuracy on move 11, which the Polish-Argentinian grandmaster capitalized perfectly. Fischer played 11…b5 trying to expand his queenside, missing out on playing 11…Nh5, which would have led to the exchange of Najdorf’s strong bishop on g3. Najdorf quickly capitalized it and played 12.Nd2, which opened the diagonal for his e2-bishop, and now Nh5 became impossible for Fischer. A few moves later, Najdorf made a pawn break in the center, which gave him a passed pawn, and he eventually, won the game.
